Music and Family

 Okay Dad, What is Music?

Hey everyone! for my Music and family blog, I interviewed my dad. My dad is kind of a stern, unsocial person that doesn't talk about himself a lot, so I was a little hesitant. I'm glad I did it though; I think the interview was good for the both of us. So, here's how our conversation went!

Me: What kind of music do you like?

-      Dad: 50s music, 60s music, Paul Simon, Eric Clapton, Louis Armstrong

       Paul Simon, "Sound of Silence"

            Eric Clapton, "Tears in Heaven"

Louis Armstrong, "Just a Closer Walk With Thee"

      Me: Why?

-      Dad: They sang songs with real soul and passion and the songs had meaning to them.

Me: Do you have a favorite song or singer?

-      Dad: Willie Nelson

Me: Why?

-      Dad: He cared about what he sung, and he sung about the reality of life. And there was passion in his songs.

            Willie Nelson, "Just Breathe"

Me: What kind of music don’t you like?

-      Dad: Rap

Me: Why?

-      Dad: It incites people, it has lyrics with attitude, and it has no meaning to it.

Me: What do you think about popular music today?

-      Dad: It has no meaning. It has no soul. It’s basically just noise and the lyrics have no meaning at all. The difference between the old songs and the new, is that the old songs will last for the next hundred years and new will last for 1 year.

Me: What music do you think is overrated?

-      Dad: Rap and acid music.

Me: What do you mean acid music?

Dad: Music that's all noise; you scream and scream onto the mics.

Me: Is there any music that you don’t listen to that you wished you listen to more?

-      Dad: Instrumental.

Me: Why not listen to it more?

-      Dad: It’s more for relaxation and puts you in a relaxed mood. I’m most of the time busy, so I don’t listen to it as much.

Me: What music did you listen to when you were young

-      Dad: Old Country music; Willie Nelson.

Me: Has your music taste changed since you were young?

-      Dad: No.

Me: How often do you listen to music now?

-      Dad: Every now and then.

Me: When do you listen to music?

-      Dad: Mostly on my days off.

Me: What devices have you used to listen to music over the years?

-      Dad: Vinyl /record players and CDs and the radio and on my phone and cassette tape.

Me: Did you play any instruments when you were younger?

-      Dad: No. I just didn’t get around to it.

Me: Are there any instruments you would like to learn to play now?

-      Dad: I would love to learn the guitar.

I honestly think he'd be really happy learning it.

My dad is a certain type of way, and I think he's been that way his whole life. He has changed a bit over the course of my life, but at his core, I believe he's still the same as he was when he was young. Whether that's good or bad, I couldn't tell you. Regardless, he's my dad, so at the very least, it just is.
